Life Transitions Therapy

What are life transitions?

Life transitions are periods of change that can affect how you see yourself, your relationships, and your direction in life. These may include expected changes, such as starting or ending a relationship or career shift, as well as unexpected events, such as loss, illness, or major disruptions in your life.

Why are life transitions so difficult?

Even positive changes can bring uncertainty, grief, or anxiety. Life transitions often involve letting go of familiar roles or identities while stepping into something unknown. This in-between period can feel destabilizing, even when the change is wanted or necessary.

What kinds of life transitions do you help with?

I work with adults navigating a wide range of transitions, including relationship changes, divorce or separation, career changes, relocation, becoming a parent, children leaving home, retirement, and other shifts in identity, purpose, or life direction.

How can therapy help during life transitions?

Therapy can provide a steady space to reflect, process emotions, and make sense of change. It can help you clarify what is ending, what is emerging, and what matters most to you as you move forward. Over time, therapy can support greater clarity, stability, and confidence during uncertain periods.

What is your approach to life transitions?

My approach is relational and informed by Jungian psychotherapy. I am interested not only in the practical aspects of change, but also in the deeper psychological meaning of transitions. This may include exploring identity, patterns from the past, emotional responses, and questions of purpose and direction.

Can life transitions bring up deeper emotional issues?

Yes. Transitions often activate underlying emotions or patterns related to earlier experiences, including grief, anxiety, or unresolved trauma. Therapy can help you understand and work through these responses with greater awareness and support.

Do you use EMDR for life transitions?

When appropriate, EMDR may be used to help process distressing or overwhelming experiences connected to a life transition. This can be integrated within a broader therapeutic process that also attends to meaning, identity, and emotional growth.

When should I seek therapy for a life transition?

You may benefit from therapy if you feel stuck, overwhelmed, or uncertain during a period of change, or if you are struggling to adjust emotionally to a new phase of life. Therapy can help you navigate transitions with greater clarity and support.

Can therapy help me find direction in life?

Yes. Many people come to therapy during transitions not only to cope with change, but also to explore questions of identity, purpose, and meaning. Therapy can provide space to reflect on what feels authentic and aligned for you moving forward.
